West meets East: Ayre
Nov 9 2013
Ayre by the Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov (1960) takes the public on a 40-minute, breathtaking journey through diverse musical traditions.
Golijov effortlessly combines Sephardic, Arabic and East European folk music with his own idiom as a composer of contemporary music. He mixes exotic and Western instruments with sampled sounds. Here and there the musicians improvise with wild abandon, and a variety of styles and tone colours follow each other in rapid succession, as do fury, love and other emotional extremes.
NB the programme includes Silent City by Kayhan Kalhor, to be performed at 20.30 by the Ragazze Quartet and Kayhan Kalhor.
