Twee pianoconcerten en een straattheater
A new piano concerto by Klaas de Vries and Ligeti’s tremendously virtuosic piano concerto are proof that the piano concerto in the 20th and 21st centuries has lost none of its splendour of sound and imaginative power.
Two equally impressive Etudes for piano by Ligeti provide the raw material for an arrangement for ensemble by the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen. The pianistic fireworks of Ligeti and De Vries flank Gougalōn, a multi-layered and varied ensemble work by the Korean Unsuk Chin, a former Ligeti student. She converts a childhood memory of Korean street entertainers into ‘imaginary folk music’ touched by humour and moments of poignancy.
