Troost
6 — 7 Mar 2013
A concert featuring surrealistic fantasies, dreams and nightmares. György Kurtág’sMessages of the Late Miss R. V. Troussova belongs to the final category. Heartrending sounds accompany the lonely monologues of an old spinster disappointed in life and love. Kurtág’s compatriot György Ligeti, creater of ‘imaginary soundscapes’, plunges into the creative chaos in his Violin Concerto. Annotations in the score, such as ‘tohuwabohu’ (confusion) and ‘deranged virtuosity’ in the last movement are self-evident. Ligeti’s Korean student Unsuk Chin refers to music as ‘a reflection of my dreams’. In her Fantaisie mécanique she creates a sound world of striking contrasts by juxtaposing rhythmically compelling episodes and dreamy, fantasy-filled ones.
