Spiegelpaleis
28 — 30 Nov 2017
Palace of mirrors [Spiegelpaleis] is an evening of chamber music featuring live electronics, speakers and singers.
This piece had its premiere in 2012, when it consisted of 9 movements; today you hear the completion of the piece. Klaas de Vries takes his cue from the question ‘Where should music composed in the West be heading?’ Two opposing directions battle against each other in the work. One direction leads to increasingly harmonious music and the other to increasingly shrill dissonance. Throughout the entire piece, Schubert’s Octet stands in the background as an object of desire. The opposing development brings the two directions into increasingly marked conflict with each other, with the desire for the tonal Paradise (the Schubert) deepening all the while. The newspaper Het Parool praised Spiegelpaleis, in a five-star review, as ‘a major monument to intelligence, fantasy, erudition, […] and good taste’.
