Sonnengesang
Cello Biënnale Amsterdam
Oct 23 2014
The greatest living Russian composer, Sofia Gubaidulina, wrote Sonnengesang in 1977 for the 70th birthday of the famed Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. It is a unique work for solo cello and mixed choir. She chose as her text the ode to creation by St. Francis of Assisi. The renowned French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and Cappella Amsterdam join forces for this high point of the cello and choral repertoire.
The Dutch cellist Doris Hochscheid and the German actress and singer Salomé Kammer perform as soloists in a new work for cello, voice and ensemble by the Korean composer Seung-Ah Oh. The French cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton presents works by her compatriot Georges Aperghis and the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen.
The composition by SEUNG-AH OH was created with the support of the Dutch Performing Arts Fund.
