With his Répons, Pierre Boulez put IRCAM in the international spotlight. This French research institute, where Boulez was the first director, aims to build a bridge between music and the science of electronics and acoustics. In Répons, sounds are manipulated in real time and dispersed throughout the concert hall. The title refers to responsorial singing, in which a soloist takes the lead and is answered by a choir. The work is a series of question and answer patterns between the soloists, at the perimeter of the audience, and the ensemble, in the middle of the hall.
