Notes on light
Nov 11 2010
After the mandolin (Eight metal strings), the harmonium (First harmonium concerto) and the violin (White eagle), Martijn Padding now presents the cello as protagonist in the series of solo concertos that he began in 2007. Padding not only takes into account the specific technical skills of the soloist Doris Hochscheid, he also tries to capture her character in the music. Her Finnish colleague Anssi Karttunen is the soloist in the Dutch première of the arrangement for ensemble of Notes on light by his compatriot Kaija Saariaho and together they give the first performance of a double concerto by Chiel Meijering. Jan van de Putte is also working on a bigger cycle, based on the poetry of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). Van de Putte is particularly captivated by Pessoa’s heteronym Álvaro de Campos, whose complex universe is characterised by an intriguing combination of insanity and intelligence.
This concert is also part of the Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale
