Louis Andriessen 75 (1)
May 8 2014
Louis Andriessen is 75 years old and still going strong – reason to celebrate! Asko|Schönberg joins Nieuw Amsterdam Peil in paying tribute to the Netherlands’ most celebrated composer with a two-day festival. High points of his oeuvre provide a comprehensive overview of Andriessen’s development: from the uncompromising works marking his early career to more recent, lyrical works.
Hoketus (1976), on the programme of 9 May, represents the forceful, angular style that was to become his calling card, while M is for Man, Music and Mozart (1991) represents his intensive collaboration with the film director Peter Greenaway. Racconto dall’ inferno (2004) attests to his love for exuberant music theatre and the monodrama Anaïs Nin (2010, programmed on 9 May) points to his fascination with mysterious women. Finally, Life (2010, also 9 May) emphasises Andriessen’s close relationship with musicians of his preference, in this case the Bang On A Can All Stars from New York.
