Ligeti Festival (5 april)
Apr 5 2018
György Ligeti himself called the Piano Concerto (1988) his most complex and virtuosic work. It is a five movement roller-coaster of overlapping rhythms; feast for the listener, but a tour de force for both soloist and conductor.
Maestro pianist Pierre-Laurant Aimand and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw form the dream team to perform this exuberant masterpiece: both of these specialists collaborated intensively with Ligeti.
The same goes for Asko|Schönberg, which has recorded all four of the items on the programme with De Leeuw, under the ever-watchful eye of the composer. Melodien is a pivotal work between Ligeti’s early ‘sound cloud’ music and his later poly-rhythmical works. He interweaves the avant-garde with folk music in Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel. To crown the proceedings, Joseph Puglia sinks his teeth into the superb Violin Concerto.
