In Between

Dec 8 2016

During In-between Asko|Schönberg casts aside the tendency to think in musical categories. Together with Slagwerk Den Haag the ensemble performs music that originates from the borderlands between various styles, composition and improvisation, acoustic sounds and electronics.

Glenn Kotche’s new work emerges in this way, with the American rock drummer giving free rein to his versatile musical personality. Wilbert Bulsink crawls into the cracks of the Western tonal system in a cross between notated score and collective improvisation; using a variety of tunings he explores the colourful world between the black-white of the piano keys. The Venezuelan Jorge Sánchez-Chiong refers to himself as a composer, improvisor and turntablist. It comes as no surprise that his ensemble work Final Girl 2009 displays the spontaneity of an improvisation. Michel van der Aa has been enchanting audiences for years with electronics and instrumental sounds. In Between and Attach, two parts of his Preposition Trilogy, he juxtaposes and layers the soundtrack and ensemble in changing constellations.
