A day before Sofia Gubaidulina’s eightieth birthday the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ dedicates a mini-festival to the Russian-Tartar composer. She composed one of the keystone works of her oeuvre for the former Schönberg Ensemble and the Netherlands Chamber Choir: Now Always Snow, a cantata depicting a Russian winter soundscape with a skilfully applied palette of sounds. Sparkling woodwind motifs and neurotically whispering strings evoke piercing wind gusts and a snowstorm. Descensio, a work rooted in Gubaidulina’s deeply-felt piousness, depicts the descent of the Holy Spirit. The composer’s musical origins, in the form of Anton Webern, call for inclusion in the programme, as does her geographical country of origin: Faradzj Karajev adds lustre to the festivities with the Dutch première of his The Outsider.
