Gandari
A dance opera
11 — 13 Dec 2014
The Indonesian composer Tony Prabowo asked Asko|Schönberg to give the première of his new work. This dance opera is inspired by the Hindu epic Gandari.
Princess Gandari of the Gandara Kingdom was married to the blind Destarata. She decides to cover her eyes with a black blindfold, so as to live in the same darkness as her husband. They had 100 sons known as the Kurawas. Until the end of her life she supported her one hundred children in their conflict against the Pandawas in the great Bharatayuda war. The Pandawas were the children of Pandu, Destarata’s younger brother. After the Bharatayuda war ended in victory for the Pandawas, Gandari, her husband and sister-in-law Kunti, the Pandawas’ mother, are all tragically killed by a forest fire.
