Fortress Europe (Sign of the Times | Episode 1)
New opera about the refugee crisis
20 Mar — 14 May 2017
Opera Trionfo and Asko|Schönberg present a new opera about one of the most important issues of our day: the refugee crisis.
It is the first part of ‘Sign of the Times’, a series of newly written operas that are quick to zero in on current events. The opera tells the story of Europa and her son, the politician. Born in North Africa, as a young woman she confronted the world with courage and idealism. Now she lives a secluded life in her Brussels apartment. In the meantime her son has been assigned the task of guarding the portal to Europe. A drama unfolds full of political interests, personal desires and the clamour of the populists’ fear and hate.
