Der Maler träumt
Oct 29 2011
In the first concert of the ‘Rihm-Resonanz’ series Reinbert de Leeuw conducts Schreker’s Kammersymphonie, which confronts the listener with ‘a sea of melodiousness and the most abominable cacophony’, in Schreker’s own words. The works of the most celebrated German composer of our time, Wolfgang Rihm, are likewise ‘uncompromising in their expressivity’. In his colourful dream spectacle Der Maler träumt – commissioned by the NTR ZaterdagMatinee – he immerses himself in the life and work of the expressionist painter Max Beckmann. ‘A longing for the melodic line’ lends him musical wings in Male über Male II. The clarinettist and composer Jörg Widmann, a student and admirer of Rihm, offers a Bavarian perspective on a visit to an Arabic emirate in his recently composed Dubairische Tänze, a work interspersed with ländler motifs.
