Dag in de Branding

With Dutch National Youth Orchestra

home

Oct 4 2014

In August every year the NJO (Dutch National Youth Orchestra) organises its so-called Summer Academy. Young musicians from the Netherlands and abroad gather together in Apeldoorn to study works of various genres and styles under the leadership of renowned coaches and perform these in the NJO Muziekzomer summer festival. This evening we will hear a repeat performance of a number of works, in collaboration with Asko|Schönberg, which will perform Andriessen’s Hoketus.

The recently deceased English composer Steve Martland, a former student of Louis Andriessen, composed a number of works for his own band, including the highly appealing Horses of Instruction; music that hovers on the border between pop and classical. The same apllies to the music of Martin Fondse, who has previously composed works for the NJO. Besides his own work he has arranged two pieces by musicians who defy categorisation. Louis Andriessen composed Hoketus for his own ‘band’ too, thus setting an example for his student Steve Martland. Hoketus and Hout are two works in the style of American minimalism.
