Sydney Festival presents: Asko|Schönberg in concert with Ensemble Offspring

Andriessen & Beyond, special

home

Jan 9 2023

Special edition of our series & Beyond to introduce Dutch composer Louis Andriessen and his former students in Australië.

Louis Andriessen, Dutch composer (1939 – 2021), was an eminent and influential composer with an enormous international reputation, creator of an awe-inspiring body of work, and teacher of a whole generation of leading contemporary composers. He was and still is of enormous significance for today’s music. He also had a close relationship with Asko|Schönberg, who premiered many of his works.

The legacy of Louis Andriessen isn’t just the great music that he left us. It lives on in the artistic output of his students that continue in his spirit.

He encouraged them to find their own language, not copy his esthetic. He wasn’t interested to promote his own music after his departure. He believed that music should be about the current generation of composers.

By performing the works of his students in this concert, we truly honor his legacy that lives on the music from now.

The music of Kate Moore, Martijn Padding on this programme is a living proof that Louis encouraged and pushed them to follow their own artistic path.

The Australian Ensemble Offspring will perform work by
Louis Andriessen and his former students Mary Finsterer,
David Lang and Damien Ricketson in this concert.
